Issue 95 Recapping why I do this & back to our roots

(11/27/2011)

This is just a little going back to the Gut Reaction Journal’s roots.  Back to reminding people of why we do this podcast and who is at fault for the mess we’re in.
We won’t give up on OWS, Dylan Ratigan or any other good causes, but we have gotten away from the show we used to do, and how, before the start the new year we intend to go back a little to where we started.

Issue 94 UC pepper spraying and punks with spray cans

(11/20/2011)
This week is about missed opportunities.  I get a little angry when I see cops, even campus cops repeatedly dosing peaceful, non-threatening protesters with pepper spray.  The missed opportunity is where the authorities still haven’t realized that the more force you use against peaceful people, the larger their ranks grow.  They still don’t get the point that discussion and peaceful resolution work far better than force, and in the case of UC Davis, excessive force NEVER works in the long run.
Also, I look at Egypt and the Occupy Movement here at home.
Plus, this week’s Good Guy is HonorVet.  Started by two Marine Veterans, including Jom McCain, son of John McCain, HonorVet helps veterans with a 21st century approach to information accessibility.

Issue 93 Occupy Delaware and 1 in 7 Americans are critically poor

(11/6/2011)
This week I go to Occupy Delaware for the first day of the occupation of Wilmington, Delaware.  It’s cold out there but these people are committed and ready.  I ask some participants a simple question; Why are you here?  The answers of many of the people there are as varied as they are and I include the reasons of three of them.
Also, we start off with a shocking report that says 1 in 7 Americans are now in extreme poverty.  There is no excuse for this and something must be done about it.

The Good Guy will be back next week.

Isue 92 Updates on Occupy & what’s going on at Rikers Island?

(10/30/2011)
This week I run down some of the arrest reports from Occupy protests around the country and an update on Scott Olsen from Oakland, CA.  Also, my take on how the increasingly heavy-handed tactics used by various city governments will probably backfire on them.
Plus, we have a phone interview with a man in Zuccotti Park.  We talk about the sudden cold snap and snow and how it’s affecting OWS, and we try to figure out why just-released inmates of Rikers Island are now heading toward Zuccotti.

Issue 91 Republicans, OWS and Occupy Delaware

(10/13/2011)
This week I’m talking about the Republicans.  The group that loves to call everyone who doesn’t agree with them “elitists” yet are the biggest elitists of all.  The quote from Pizzaman Herman Cain says it all.  I also look at the GOPs total obsession with President Obama as an indicator that, just like anybody else who has an obsession, can’t think of much of anything else except beating this guy, and that includes doing their jobs and working FOR the American People instead of against them.
Also in this issue; More about Occupy Wall Street and my introduction to Occupy Delaware.  You can tell how impressed I was and how I went as a reporter and came out a member.

Issue 90 The Bailout, Occupy Wall ST and DO Something

(10/16/2011)
This time we look at how the banks probably knew they were going to be bailed out long before they sold one worthless investment.  Also, more clarification about Occupy Wall Street’s unselfish, nonpartisan motives.  Plus, I get out from behind the microphone and go to Occupy Delaware (even the Police were impressed)

Issue 89 A Time For Some Action and Support

(10/9/2011)
This week the Gut Reaction takes a turn toward activism with an official declaration of support for the Occupy Wall Street movement and a lengthy interview with Ryan Hoffman, co-author of the movements’ ONLY official declaration to date (check the link below).  None  of the “demands” other people are posting to their website and elsewhere, apparently out of wishful thinking on their part, are legitimate or official.
We start with MSNBC’s Dylan Ratigan’s call to ‘Get Money out of Politics’ and, with over 162 THOUSAND signatures (as of Sunday night) supporting Ratigan’s proposed constitutional amendment aimed at shutting off the flow of big money to politicians, it’s an excellent, and clear expression of the people’s outrage.
And the continue with our series about the Occupy Wall Street protest-turned-movement and how THAT is also a great example of the people’s unhappiness with our government and the multi-Billion dollar corporations that are buying our government wholesale.

The GRJ #88 The ‘Occupy Wall Street’ protest Pt2

(10/2/2011)

This week we have just one topic again.  The ‘Occupy Wall Street’ protest is entering its third week and shows no sign of letting up.  And now, new protests are springing up in cities all across the country.  Is this the beginning of the end for the corporation/government alliance that is hurting this country or just a very stressful time for the nation?
And we have another guest, a man who was there in the middle of it all just last week.  He will share his experiences, insights and observations with us in this week’s edition of the Journal.

Plus, this week’s Good Guy is Mercy Medical Airlift, the group that flies patients to faraway facilities to get the medical care they need.

Issue 87 The NYC ‘Occupy Wall Street’ protest

(9/25/2011)  This week we have one topic, the New York City ‘Occupy Wall Street’ protest where thousands of angry citizens, in the best tradition of the 1960s have come together to display their anger at what Wall Street and the US Government (which Wall St, had purchased many years ago) have together done to this country, our economy and our future.  Eight days and 80+ arrests later, they’re still going strong.  And we have an interview with someone who has been there.
Are protests like this still effective in this day and age, and will they have any effect on the rest of society and perhaps stir them to REALLY take our country back?  I for one am hopeful that these people in New York can help to mobilize the nation and focus our attention on the true enemy, Congress.

Issue 86 Congress and why we need a LEADER and we have to watch out for China

(9/18/2011)  I’ve been saving up this rant for weeks.
1, why are we so STUPID that we can allow Congress to  get away with wrecking our economy and putting us into massive debt and then let them treat US like WE are the ones responsible for all this?
2, things are so bad, and precarious right now that we don’t need a decent president or even a good one.  We need a GREAT president and a leader strong enough to push Congress harder than they push HIM and unfortunately I’m just not seeing that with President Obama.
3, why did we allow this government to put us in deep debt to China, while that country isn’t even a friend or ally of the United States and just a few short decades ago, they were our adversary and can do us a world of damage when the time is right for them?
And 4, are we so dumb that we never realized that all the money we’ve been borrowing from all these other countries has to be paid BACK at some time and we keep putting in the same politicians that put us in so much debt to begin with?

Issue 85 My take on 9/11/2001 and how we got here.

(9/11/2011)  This issue of the Journal is, for obvious reasons, about the events of 9/11/2001.  I don’t get into the actual event that much.  It’s more a matter of how that day changed our lives, and not for the better.

Issue 84 Is China our econ model, Obama, the EPA and a nasty preacher.

(9/4/2011)  This week we start with two questions.  What possessed President Obama to drop the new EPA standards for ozone and is he deliberately trying to torpedo his own reelection chances?  And why does it look like the new economic model for the United States could be China?  Too many similarities to ignore.
Also, we have one more bit of food for thought on why we need to get rid of all the currently sitting members of Congress all at once.
I respond to an e-mail from a listener who thinks I am obsessed with Congress and we play a little bit of a rant from one of the most hateful and obnoxious “preachers” I’ve heard in a long time, and a little bit is about all we can stand.
